Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder. Although it is not as common as other disorders like depression or anxiety problems, the symptoms can be very disabling. It not only impairs work and occupational functioning, but also day to day activities and social life.

It’s characteristic symptoms are profound distortions in thinking, language, perception, and sense of self. The individual suffering from this disorder may show loss of touch with the reality, false beliefs, being suspicious without reason and hearing of imaginary of voices.

The typical age of onset is late teenage or early adulthood. It is not only treatable, but with timely expert psychiatric intervention one can lead a productive life.

  1. Schizophrenia is genetic ? My mother was suffered …a lot …and my grandmother also died ..with this mental disorder.
    Can I also….suffer ??? This question run in my mind every time

      Yes, Schizophrenia has some genetic predisposition. The risk for developing schizophrenia is relatively more in you than the general population as there is a positive history of illness in your family. Although, there is also a good possibility of you not developing schizophrenia. However, you must be vigilant about early symptoms of Schizophrenia as a timely psychiatric intervention in initial stage can resolve the illness. Remember, that it is like any other medical or psychiatric problem, and is very much treatable if the treatment is started early in the course.
